Ida Retz Wessberg: Circulation
Materials: Bamboo, silver leaf, plastic tube, bassin with a jesmonite cast of sewn together puffer jackets and steel sides, water pump, solar panel, steel and metal constructions.
Measures: L340xH150xD250 cm.
In the artwork Circulation (Cornerudstillingen, Gammelgaard Kunsthal, 2025) I investigate the materiality and symbolism of water. In an eternal circulation, the water flows through a controlled path in the sculpture, finally landing in the round basin again. The viewer can stop this water cycle by shading the solar panel, as an image of human intervention in nature. Circulation my interrests in circuits and ventilation systems, and how I as a sculptor can 'shape' air and water. The artwork also demonstrates my interrests in the site specific, as I have done the artwork specifically for the public park beside Gammelgaard Kunsthal in Herlev (DK). I have taken into consideration both the scale of the artwork, as well as adding an exotic, unexpected element in the danish landscape: the 2,4 meter long bamboo (which is originally used for building sites in China). The foregin element in the danish setting is underlined by the Kintsugi-inspired method - which I have used for layering silver leaf into the cracks in the huge bamboo - a tradition used in China and Japan for repairing porcelain and stoneware services.
